Dr. Robert N. Pope joined the Owensboro Advanced Sleep Center in July 2010. While he spends most of his time seeing patients in the clinic and interpreting sleep studies, he also has administrative duties as medical director overseeing policies and procedures, quality assurance, and staff development.

 

“Sleep medicine is a relatively new but rapidly growing field that was recognized in 2007 as an independent medical specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties” says Dr. Pope.  He is board certified by the:

 

Dr. Pope was born in South Florida and graduated from Coral Gables High School.  He received a B.A. degree from Vanderbilt University and a M.D. degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine.  He completed postgraduate studies in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Louisville.

 

Dr. Pope and his family have lived in Owensboro since 1982.  He practiced pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine in Owensboro for 23 years and served as the first medical director of the OMHS Sleep Lab (1997-2005).   He worked full-time in sleep medicine at St. Mary’s Sleep Disorders Center in Evansville, IN (2005-2010) and served as the first medical director of the Memorial Hospital Sleep Center in Jasper, IN (2008-2010).

 

Dr. Pope has been a member of the board of the Kentucky Sleep Society since its founding in 1999 and was elected president in 2005 and 2011.  He has been active in the Indiana Society of Sleep Professionals since 2005.  "My colleagues and friends in the state professional societies have devoted their time and talents to advance the field of sleep medicine and increase awareness of sleep disorders in our communities," says Dr. Pope.   Over the past 17 years he has participated in numerous presentations on sleep disorders for the public and healthcare professionals throughout Kentucky and Indiana. He is a volunteer clinical instructor for the Respiratory Care Program at the University of Southern Indiana and the Indiana University School of Medicine - Evansville.
